What does MOBiNET stand for?

MOBiNET – Europe-Wide Platform for Cooperative Mobility Services - is a research and development project that aims to develop, deploy and operate the technical and organisational foundations of an open, multi-vendor platform for Europe-wide mobility services.
It is a co-funded project by the 7th Framework programme of the European Union. The project runs from November 2012 until June 2017.
MOBiNET project coordinator is ERTICO – ITS Europe, there are 32 other consortium partners.

What is the MOBiNET platform?
MOBiNET is an e-marketplace and a technical platform enabling the interactions between suppliers, developers and users of mobility related content and services. It offers a centralised directory for publishing and editing Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) services as well as functionality enabling and supporting interoperability between data sources. The services will be offered across Europe without the need for standardised hardware.

MOBiNET Homepage

The MOBiNET platform architecture provides the required infrastructure functionality to let service providers easily compose their services based on available data or other B2B services, and to deliver their services to end users. This is provided by core components [see section “Components & tools” [insert hyperlink] for service management, identity management, billing support, communication support, data quality assessment and the TSPManager.

Because of the research character of the project, MOBiNET focuses on mobility aspects and provides a proof of concept platform.

What are the MOBiNET core services or components?

MOBiNET Components and Tools

The MOBiNET platform provides components and tools that enable interactions between travellers, transport users, transport system operators, services providers, content providers and transport infrastructures. At the heart of the platform is the MOBiCENTRE which includes: Service Directory, identity Manager, Billing and TSP Manager.

MOBiNET “core services” versus Services enabled or enhanced by MOBiNET
MOBiNET core services are components implemented as a MOBiNET platform use case demonstration.
In parallel with the MOBiNET platform development, MOBiNET designed and developed a number of reference applications (“services”) for trialling in pilot sites in 8 countries. Applications chosen show substantial value gain thanks to MOBINET.
Services implemented act as platform use case demonstrations and “proof of concept” to test and validate the platform at the project pilot sites.

Why pilot sites in MOBiNET?

The MOBiNET pilot sites are used to verify and validate the three MOBiNET platform releases with continuous upgrading of platform core components and services. The MOBiNET platform and core services are tested using the 8 use cases to demonstrate the “proof of concept”. The verification and validation happen in 8 well selected pilot sites (Aalborg, Helmond, Helsinki, London, Torino, Trikala, Trondheim and Vigo).
Pilot sites were chosen to give a wide geographical coverage, a variety of settings and strong engagement of local user interests from public and private sectors. A large variety of local ITS stakeholders take part in these pilot site verification and validation activities.

Each pilot site hosts one or multiple of the above mentioned services to validate the results of every iteration [hyperlink to platform release page]. This approach helps a lot to improve the overall quality of the platform and to further identify relevant requirements.

What are Platform releases?

The MOBiNET platform, core services or components are continuously being upgraded in a series of platform releases.

Iterative incremental approach

MOBINET follows the Agile methodology: there will be 3 releases of the Platform:
R1 – July 2014
R2 – September 2015
R3 – March 2016

Releases 1, 2 and 3
Platform release no. 1 was launched at the European ITS Congress in Helsinki in June 2014. The second release of the platform took place at the ITS World Congress in Bordeaux June 2015. Platform release 2 was introduced to developers and start-uppers in the context of an ITS Hackathon, organised to stimulate new MOBiNET service ideas. [insert link to Bordeaux]
The verification and validation of release 3.0 took place in 2016. Release 3.0 will be available end of September 2016. The verification and validation will happen between September and end of November 2016.

Intermediate release of platform - release 3.1
The development of Release 3.1 of MOBiNET platform is currently ongoing and will include all the core functionalities for the services already available in the previous release, as well as the billing & clearing module. R3.1 will be validated at the pilot sites in autumn 2016
All planned services will be implemented on the 8 pilot sites and the MOBiNET platform with all its functionality will be thoroughly validated with these services.

Final release Strasburg - Release 4.0
The final platform release, release 4.0, will include all modifications necessary that came out of the verification and validation of R3.1 (and earlier releases).
The requirements for release 4.0 will be ready by end of December 2016. Release 4.0 will be commissioned in February 2017, verification and limited validation will happen in spring 2017.
The final MOBiNET event will take place at the ITS European Congress in Strasbourg, June 2017.

What is the MOBiNET Provider Community?
MOBiNET facilitates a network of content and service providers, a Community of private, public and commercial users of the Platform and providers of the portfolio of services and contents that will attract other providers and users.

Register here and become one of the first external users of the platform release R3.1 that comes out in the autumn 2016.
